The Battle of Cable Street

The big man moved with great speed for someone so cumbersome. Within an instant he had placed the weight back on the nearest rack and taken two great strides across the mat towards her.

Within an instant he was towering over her, still ruddy and sweating. He gripped her forearm tightly and drew her close to his face. She yelped as tears welled in her eyes.

He brought her face up to his, so she could not escape his manic stare. His face filled her view, not allowing her look away.

  1. Only a very small part of the images of The Cable Street Mural shown on this website are by Dave Binnington. The smaller detail showing the copper and red flag is entirely by Ray Walker. The upper part of the main image is indeed by Dave but I painted the lower part. Dave had originally asked me to paint ‘praedella panels’ along the bottom of the mural but when the mural was severely damaged by Fascist vandals in about 1979 Dave resigned from the project and I took it over. I asked Ray Walker and Desmond Rochfort to work with me and we divided the surface into four sections and redesigned and painted the mural. The upper section of the buildings is all that remains of Dave’s work. The left section is by Ray, the central section is by me and the right section is by Desmond Rochfort. It took about a year of incredibly hard but hugely enjoyable work and was completed in 1981. Since then it has been restored and repaired a number of times following Fascist attacks, firstly by Ray and subsequently by me.

Sadly Ray died suddenly a year or so after it was completed.

    1. Paul,
There’s only one thing we freedom lovers can tell you: carry on!
Thanks, many thanks for your work.
